Being a trucker can be tough. Not only do they have to undergo long intervals of time away from home and suffer a lack of sleep, but they also face a lot of risks while on the road. From the dangers of a car accident, extreme weather, sleep deprivation, and so much more. However, one big issue is hardly ever talked about. Skin damage due to the sun. The windows of your truck are not UV protected, and after an extensive amount of time behind the wheel of your wig, you’re putting your skin at risk for some serious damage if you don’t take some precautions.

In this post, we’ll be providing you with a few tips to keep yourself protected. To learn more about our trucking software, please don’t hesitate to contact us today! Our transportation software helps both freight brokers and truckers alike to do their day-to-day tasks and make your job so much easier.

Know the Signs

Understandably for truckers, the left side of the face is the area that is most exposed to the harmful rays of the sun. The first step to making sure that you avoid skin damage is to be able to recognize the signs. Even minimal damage can cause some serious problems. Long sun exposure without protection can even lead to skin cancer. Here are some of the signs that you should look out for:

  • Sunburns
  • Age Spots
  • Wrinkles
  • Skin Spots
  • Rough Texture
  • Spider Veins
  • Sudden Freckles

If you have noticed any of the following, don’t worry, it’s not too late. Just make sure to start being proactive about protecting your skin. The following are a few steps that you can take.

Sunscreen, Sunscreen, Sunscreen

This one should be obvious, but a lot of truckers still decide to opt out of applying sunscreen. We know that it doesn’t seem like your skin will be damaged, you’re inside your cab after all, but the harmful UVA rays are still able to get through to you. It is up to you how strong you want the sunscreen to be, but we highly recommend a sunscreen that is at least 30 SPF. Make sure you lather it on good before you hit the road. There’s no such thing as overdoing it, so don’t hesitate to put more layers on throughout the day.

Protective Clothing

We know you like to be comfortable when you are driving, it’s something that helps deal with the long hours that truckers have to go through. But even in the summer, we suggest that you wear clothes that help cover up your skin. Wear pants and a light, breathable long-sleeved shirt. Doing this as well as applying your sunscreen throughout the day will go a long way to keep you protected from the sun and prevent skin damage.

Sunglasses

Your skin isn’t the only thing that you need to keep protected from the sun. Your vision is incredibly important for your job. You have to be able to clearly see the road while on the job, so you need to make sure to protect your eyes as well. Don’t just buy a cheap pair the next truck stop that you find yourself in. Invest in a pair of high-quality sunglasses. We suggest getting a pair that helps to block out both UVA and UVB rays. Your eyes are exposed to the sun for multiple hours every day that you’re on the job, so we really urge you to follow this advice.
