Life as a truck driver isn’t for the faint of heart. It requires long (and we mean long) hours on the road, a massive amount of time away from home, and trying to get the sleep you need to stay alert. And while it is a necessary and rewarding job, it’s not an occupation that makes it easy to stay healthy — mentally or physically.

Here at Strategy Systems, we want to help the truckers out there in any way that we can. Obviously, the main way that we do this is through our web-based and user-friendly trucking software, but we also want to provide some advice for truckers. You want to take care of your body and your mind while on the road, and you’ll see big changes by just following a few simple tips. We get it. It’s extremely difficult for truckers to watch what they eat. You want to cover as much mileage as possible when you’re behind the wheel so ready-to-go convenience food or fast food is always a preferred choice for drivers. Next time you’re near a grocery store, stock up on some healthier options like hard boiled eggs, yogurt, and nuts. And when you do stop by diners or fast food, try and opt for their lighter options.

For up to 11 hours, truckers spend most of their day sitting behind the wheel. This doesn’t provide many options for getting exercise. But sparing just 15-30 minutes a day getting exercise will go a long way towards your overall health. Even just taking a walk during your break will help. To really get some good exercise in during your day, stash some free weights in your truck or even get a foldable bike!

Nearly every single truck driver has experienced sleep deprivation at one in time. It can be tricky getting the necessary amount of sleep. But this is dangerous. It’s estimated that up to 34 percent of truckers have nodded off while driving. This is, obviously, not safe. Do everything you can to get the sleep your body and mind need to stay alert. If possible, try to sleep at the same time every day. It helps to make your sleeping area as comfortable as possible. Get a blackout curtain or a sleeping mask, get a comfortable blanket and pillow, etc.

Mental Health

Don’t forget to take some time for yourself and what you enjoy doing. This will help your mental fitness. It can be difficult driving all day every day, so if you have a hobby that you enjoy, bring supplies along with you. Fan of reading? Always have a good book available so that you can take a little brain break. Take care of yourselves out there truckers!
